Spoiler free... but fantastic read, great Riddler story.
By Snake Eyes
I really enjoyed this book, it was exciting, interesting and kept me into it the entire way through. I was really surprised at it's complexity and intricate detail... the Joker would be proud! This was a fantastic Riddler book... I just wished it had come out BEFORE the video game for which it is a prequel for? Riddle me that! But it was definitely a great read! I'm giving no details/spoilers so, I'll leave it at that.

great book for a great game
By Bobthealmost
This book is actually quite good . I've been playing the video game and was worried it would interfere with the storyline but it doesn't matter what order . It's just a great story that shows how the riddler set himself up to try to take down the dark knight . I finished it in 2 days very good quick read . I definitely suggest reading it to any batman fan

Riddle me this, riddle me that, is this book worthy of Gotham's most famous Bat?

Note: No Spoilers here.
Full disclosure, I'm a big Arkham series fan. It's one of my favorite game franchises and Arkham Knight was the deciding factor that pushed me into purchasing a new 'next/current' gen console. So, that should provide a decent example of how infatuated I am with the Arkham world.
I had previously read Alex Irvine's Transformers: Exodus novel, which was a fun romp...albeit for a few character errors and plot contradictions. But, with that said, I'm sure Irvine did the best he could with the time he was given to write that novel and the demands of fitting twenty-five years of Transformers continuity into a single origin story.
The Riddler's Gambit is a self-contained tale that takes place between the Arkham City and Arkham Knight games. It's primarily a Riddler story, as the title implies, but does feature a few familiar faces from Batman's rogues gallery. Overall, Irvine nails the ambiance and feel of the Batman/Arkham world. His dialogue choices are, mostly, true to their respective characters, especially when it comes to Robin (who plays a significant role here), and several of the villains. There are a few slips for other characters here and there, but nothing too drastic or problematic. Again, I'd rather not mention any of the villains, as I felt that it would rob any eager reader the thrill of who show's up during the story.
There's an event or two where Batman and Commissioner Gordon seem out of character, especially during some integral scenes near the end, but the action moves at such a breakneck pace that it isn't a glaring issue and can be overlooked. Irvine certainly "gets" the characters better than other several other authors who penned earlier Batman novels.
My main gripe with the novel is that Irvine makes a few contradictions that are at odds with the established Arkham lore from the games. At times, these were large enough to take me out of the novel. Irvine mentions some big events that don't fit with the timeline that we've witnessed in Arkham Origins, Asylum, and City. I don't hold Irvine directly responsible--if he was unfamiliar with the Arkham mythos and never played the games, it's a lot to decipher and grasp (of course, not so much for one who played the games, but I digress). I'm just disappointed that no one from Warner Brothers, Rocksteady, or whichever corporate power that commissioned this novel tie-in, didn't have someone catch these easily corrected missteps.
Another issue was that Irvine gets a bit too wordy with describing some of the Riddler's traps. It might work great for an in-game level where the player goes through the motions, but can become a tad boring for the reader. Irvine does has a knack for repeating himself, either in descriptions or through characters' thoughts. Sometimes it just feels like Irvine fell a number of pages short and he's trying to up the word count.
Regardless, The Riddler's Gambit is highly recommended for anyone who can't get enough of the Arkham world established by the video games, and wishes to read about the Riddler concocting a fiendish plan to ensnare Batman and Robin. Also, find out why Batman doesn't use the Arkham Asylum version of the Batmobile in Arkham Knight.
