Great Textbook!!!

This book is one of the best textbooks on the Renaissance and Reformation that I've ever read. Zophy delicately balances discussion on both aspects of the period, which is something a lot of writers don't do, enabling the reader to see the big picture. Some of my classmates have complained about Zophy not keeping to a strict chronological style, but personally I like the way that he breaks the period up topically while keeping to a loose chronology. I could understand the want of a chronological style if one was not basically familiar with the period. However, this is an upper level course, so I find Zophy's style more suited to the kind of topical discussion that takes place in it. Another thing, while I wish all of the visuals in it could be in color, I realize that's not feasible if they want to keep the cost down. And the visuals that are in color are beautiful and well selected to show the progression of art during the period. I would recommend this book for any professor teaching a Renaissance and Reformation course or someone just looking to gain a basic knowledge and insight into the period.

Only buy if you have to.

Pros:
— Easy to read and doesn't get too dry. There is even a little humor mixed in, if one looks closely for it.
— Clearly labeled sections with a good table of contents. If you're using this for a college class, you'll really appreciate these traits.
Cons:
— All of the information is very superficial. You won't be able to get real history out of this, just a summary of events (And no, a summary of events is not "history" as a historian might understand the term.)
— Very poor citations, which means this book is unlikely to ever be able to help someone with research. It's not a good source itself, and it's difficult to find other sources from the bibliography.

Perfect introduction - modern sources

I have just skimmed through this book, but it offers a very modern perspective on the period. If you want a great college level introduction book, this is it. Perfect for a High School AP Euro history class.
