Gifted students have the potential to learn material earlier and faster, to handle more complexity and abstraction, and to solve complex problems better. This potential, however, needs stimulating experiences from home and school or it will not unfold. These books are designed to help teachers provide the stimulating curricula that will nurture this potential in school. The units presented in this series are based on research into how these students actually think differently from their peers and how they use their learning styles and potential not merely to develop intellectual expertise, but to move beyond expertise to the production of new ideas.
The Language Arts book includes units that ask students to develop strong personalities for their main characters while writing mysteries, study Freud's psychoanalytic theory and then analyze a classic novel using what they've learned, focus on writing from a specific point of view, and increase their appreciation for poetry by studying famous poets.

Challenging Units for Gifted Learners: Teaching the Way Gifted Students Think - Language Arts
By Howard Bultinck
Having been superintendent and principal at Sunset Ridge School District #29, Northfield, Illinois for twenty-four years, I am now in a unique position to review Challenging Units for Gifted Learners: Teaching the Way Gifted Students Think -Language Arts by Kenneth J. Smith, Ph.D., Prufrock Press, 2010. The School District's passion to ensure that the needs of all gifted students were met lead to the design and implementation of exacting and exciting units of study by Dr. Ken Smith Language Arts. Having personally witnessed Dr. Smith's outstanding gifts in the implementation and teaching of many of these units first-hand, I was excited to learn the units were committed to a formal writing process and published so that students across our county might benefit from his wisdom. Drawing upon his research work in cognitive psychology from Columbia University in New York, Dr. Smith enlightens readers on the different ways in which gifted learners think and process information and how to reach gifted learners in different ways. The book is a tutorial for learning about gifted learners as well as a vital source for unique units of study for teaching. As a teaching tool the book is divided into chapters for each unit of study with specific step-by-step lesson plans. Each chapter uses an easy-to-follow format with the following sections: Overview, Cognitive Connection, National Standards, Activities, Challenging Minds: Highlighted Activities and Adaptations. The book provides the reader with all the details necessary to understand the background of the unit and to successfully teach it. This book is for novice and experienced teachers working to ensure successful experiences for their students. It is a must read as it will enlighten you on your journey as a professional attempting to understand how your gifted learners think and learn as well as assist you with specific unit plans to successfully reach them.

If only Social Studies had been taught this way. . . .
By Jim Vopat
Teachers are always on the lookout for lesson plans that don't just "occupy" student time but engage and expand it. Anyway, I'm always looking for lesson plans that make learning exciting, interactive, and memorable. And more than that, I'm also on the hunt for lesson plans based on research and that also meet the national standards. The fact that lesson plans like that aren't easy to find is one of the reasons CHALLENGING UNITS is such a valuable resource.
What's great about this book are the daily learning activities--including designing a baseball card or web page, writing letters, clever knowledge games, historical narratives, drawing to conceptualize, group collaborations, interviews, role playing, writing in a wide range of genres, thinking from different points of view, and many others. These units are definitely challenging, but at the same time they're imaginative, intriguing, and have a way of transporting every student into the learning process. Each unit contains an overview, and sections on the cognitive connection, national standards, activities, challenging minds: highlighted activities, and adaptations--all written with an eye for management details that only classroom teachers can truly appreciate.

This is a great classroom resource for teachers of gifted students!
By Lelide
I teach sixth, seventh, and eighth grade gifted students. Needless to say, I'm often strapped for time when it comes down to lesson planning. I have taught the Freudian Analysis Unit as well as the Poetry Unit in this book. My students have truly enjoyed the units from this book. I enjoy that they take minimal prep, but, at the same time, are very challenging for my students. I have seen an improvement in both analysis and narrative writing thus far. What an awesome resource!
