The OpenGL SuperBible lives up to its name: nearly 700 pages of examples, function descriptions, and code snippets for the Windows-based programmer trying to get up to speed on coding OpenGL graphics.

This new edition has been revised and updated to include OpenGL 1.2, which offers more features and tighter integration with hardware accelerators than any earlier version. Sections are logically broken down into graphics fundamentals and an introduction to OpenGL, the "Meat and Potatoes" of OpenGL rendering, and the specifics of OpenGL programming for Windows.

Long on examples and function descriptions, the book is a bit short on pictures, color plates, and screen shots. However, the accompanying CD-ROM has all the examples used in the book, some other exciting examples of OpenGL programming (the flight simulator with the terrain generator is remarkably smooth, for example), and the OpenGL library toolkits (GLUT 3.7, MESA 3, ZLIB 1.1.3, and others). It doesn't contain, however, a searchable electronic version of the book, which would have been very valuable given its complexity. But the book is thorough, and it covers every aspect of OpenGL programming, making it a good reference for anyone who codes for graphics applications, in spite of its shortcomings. --Mike Caputo

Far from being a Bible, but still a good book

A very good introduction for the opengl newbie who doesn't want to mess up with 3D theory and math right from the start. The price to pay is some of the explanations end up being rather superficial. I like the practically oriented attitude of the book and the wealth of examples, from basics to more complex. Do not expect this to be a book that will transform you from a complete openGL newbie to a master... but it a very good introduction for somone who needs to make sense of openGL and see it at work. It uses GLUT as a library to interface with OS specific command like showing windows or getting keyboard input to shield you from having to deal with the dreaded windows API or any other OS dependent functions. If this is a good or bad thing , you decide. You will have to "treasure" the CD coming with the book as you will have no chance to download the source code form the web. I find this EXTREMELY annoying! The third edition is coming out so watch out for it!

Useful as an overview, but...

This book is useful as a quick overview of the OpenGL API, but fails to teach the fundementals of graphics programming necessary to apply the API to real-world problems. Also, it appears that Michael Sweet was brought on board to "write" the second edition. Where Wright stresses OpenGL's platform independence, Sweet ignores this thread of the book and writes code that is tightly linked with the Windows API.
Anyone looking to learn OpenGL should stick to the college texts, such as F.S. Hill's Computer Graphics Using OpenGL. These books are reviewed by CS professors who use the books in their classrooms, and as such only the good ones make it to print.

A worthy intro to OpenGL

It's hard not to write a review of an OpenGL book without comparing it to the Red Book, so I'll go ahead and do just that. Overall, I think the Superbible is every bit as useful as the Red Book, but in different ways. Although the Red Book has more detailed coverage, the Superbible focuses more on the practical side, covering the things you'll use and how you'll use them. Where the Red Book remains entirely platform-independent, the Superbible has quite a bit of Windows specific information, which is good since that's what a lot of us use. Finally, while the Red Book provides fairly generic OpenGL coverage, the Superbible is geared more toward real-time applications and games, which makes it a bit more appealing to folks like me.
One really nice thing about this book is that it assumes no previous graphics programming experience (unlike the Red Book). It's also written in a more conversational tone. Those two factors combined probably make it a better book for beginners. If your objective is to make games, and you want to use OpenGL for them, then, at the time of writing, this is really the only book available on OpenGL containing any significant amount of game-specific material (though I *cough* have it on good authority that an OpenGL game programming book is on the horizon...)
To sum up, I think that the Superbible's OpenGL coverage is quite good, it's extremely well written, and the code examples are both illustrative and useful. If you choose it as your means of learning OpenGL, you won't be disappointed.

Consequently, we must acknowledge the sometimes rather ordinary beginnings of some of the world's great works of art--an admission, say the contributors, that will open new avenues of study and enhance our understanding of the complex connections between invention and execution.

With one exception, these essays were delivered as lectures in conjunction with the exhibition The Artists and Artisans of Florence: Works from the Horne Museum hosted by the Georgia Museum of Art in the fall of 1992.

About the Author
Kathleen Allen, PhD is a professor of entrepreneurship at the USC Marshall School of Business and founding director of the Marshall Center for Technology Commercialization. Allen works with scientists and engineers to identify markets and applications for their technologies, develop commercialization teams, and prepare them to launch ventures and seek funding. She is the author of more than 15 books in the field of entrepreneurship and technology commercialization. Her personal entrepreneurial endeavors include two successful companies in commercial real estate brokerage, development, and investment, and two technology-based businesses that commercialized patented technologies. Dr. Allen served as entrepreneur-in-residence to a major aerospace firm, serves as advisor to several private companies, and is director of a NYSE company. She was just selected as Entrepreneurship Educator of the Year for 2014 by the U.S. Association for Small Business and Entrepreneurship.

The perfect quick read.

This book was recommended to me by a person capable of deep thought and complex reasoning.. after reading it I can see why. It is a quick and easy read, but has an eerie depth to it... it will make you think. The book helped me form machine ethics questions, and also provoked hours of thought on humanity, the future of machine intelligence, and ersatz immortality.

Futuristic SCI-FI dysmal novelist

Phillip K. Dick was a unique Sci-Fi writer. Two very successful films have been taken from his works. This one became "Blade Runner", an excellent movie, but hardly recognisable from this novel. The book is much more complicated and dysmal. The main character actually has an electonic sheep android. Earth is almost unliveable. The blade runner is actually that - chases and destroys run away droids. And it reaches a similar ending except more tragic. All of his work predicts some very accurate items and situations, while others humorisly are not. A world where we have placed cities on Mars and Venus, but still use coin operated phone boots and atena TVs. At the same time you are dealing with hallucinic drug characters which come from Dick's own drug problems. "Minority Report" from a short story is easier to understand.

One which I would uggest more is "The Man In the High Castle" both an excellent novel and TV series.

Somewhat Disappointed

I am a huge fan of Blade Runner, and of Speculative Fiction in general. Somehow I never had gotten around to reading this book, the inspiration for Blade Runner. I can't remember ever before feeling like the movie was better than the book...until now.

There are substantial differences in the storyline, which is to be expected. But Dick's characters were mostly flat and unengaging, while the movie characters were deep and intriguing. The overall tone of the book was morose and depressing, and it was really difficult to find anything likeable about the protagonist. Anyway on to the pros and cons

PROS:
1) Great worldbuilding. In fact, the depth and thoroughness of the worldbuilding and scene setting was the book's greatest redeeming quality.
2) A fairly clean read. I liked that the author was able to tell the story without geeting into gratuitous, graphic detail on the sex and violence parts. Of course this had much to do with the societal standards of the time, but it also shows that these modern authors often take the cheap road to audience appeal, when it is perfectly possible to write a solid story without the need to be graphic about the less-wholesome parts. The content was there, but it was handled in a much more professional way than so many authors today manage to pull off.

CONS:
1) Characters. The protagonist was brooding and generally, for me, unrelatable. The androids came off as lifeless (no pun intended) and not overly smart or capable. This coldness was likely Dick's intention to convey their difference from humans, but they weren't believable antagonists. It was too easy for Rick to take them out.
2) Challenge soo simple. As I mentioned, I just never felt the protagonist was in any real danger. No suspense building, no feeling of overwhelming odds, just very clinical and "matter of fact" writing.

So all in all I was sadly disappointed. I have wanted for years to sit down and read this book, and I will probably look for other things from Dick to see if it was just this book or a trend, but the movie, in this case, surpassed the book.

They introduce a decision framework called SMART-T to support migration of software testing to the cloud, a distributed environment called HadoopUnit for the concurrent execution of test cases in the cloud, and a series of case studies illustrating the use of the framework and the environment. Experimental results indicate a significant reduction in test execution time is possible when compared with a typical sequential environment.

Software testing in the cloud is a subject of high interest for advanced practitioners and academic researchers alike. For advanced practitioners, the issue of cloud computing and its impact on the field of software testing is becoming increasingly relevant. For academic researchers, this is a subject that is replete with interesting challenges; there are so many open problems that graduate students will be busy for years to come.� To further disseminate results in this field, the authors created a community of interest called “Software Testing in the Cloud” (www.STITC.org), and they encourage all readers to get involved in this exciting new area.

About the Author
Scott Tilley is a faculty member at the Florida Institute of Technology, where he is a Professor of Software Engineering in the Department of Computer Sciences, a Professor of Information Systems in the College of Business, and an Associate Member of the Harris Institute for Assured Information. He is also a Visiting Scientist at Carnegie Mellon University's Software Engineering Institute. His current research is in software testing, cloud computing, and system migration. He is the lead editor of the book Software Testing in the Cloud: Perspectives on an Emerging Discipline (IGI Global, 2012). He writes the weekly "Technology Today" column for the Florida Today newspaper (Gannett). Scott holds a PhD in Computer Science from the University of Victoria.�
Tauhida Parveen is an independent consultant and trainer with an emphasis on cloud computing and software testing. She has worked in quality assurance with organizations such as WikiMedia Foundation, Millennium Engineering & Integration, Yahoo!, Sabre, and Progressive Auto Insurance. She has presented at numerous trade conferences, published in several academic journals, and organized workshops at international events. She is an ISTQB Foundation Level Certified Software Tester (CTFL). She is the co-editor of the book Software Testing in the Cloud: Perspectives on an Emerging Discipline (IGI GLobal, 2012). Tauhida holds a PhD in Computer Science from the Florida Institute of Technology.
