Hischak’s aim “is to describe every Broadway production (play, musical, revival, and specialty) over the past eighty-eight years,” and he hits a bull’s-eye with this comprehensive catalog of more than 14,000 Broadway productions. Concise entries provide distinctive details about each production, including plot, critical reaction, cast, and characters. In the interest of space, the listings of cast members and titles of songs in musicals are representative rather than complete. An alphabetical catalog of productions from A la Carte (1927) to The Zulu and the Zayda (1965) includes shows (and revivals) presented from 1919 to 2007. According to Hischak, 1919 was the year by which most New York theaters were located in the area around Times Square, as they are now. Because of their significance in theater history, some 600 shows presented before 1919 are also included. Another feature of this weighty work is a two-part chronology of productions consisting first of a list of notable shows from 1749 to 1919 and then a summary of every Broadway season from 1919 to 2007. Although there is little detail in this chronology, each entry does provide the number of performances for each production, and having a quick list for each season is very helpful. There is also an alphabetically-arranged index by personal name and show title. The performing arts are ephemeral, and documentation is essential if their history is to be preserved. This rich resource supplies the necessary facts needed when embarking on a study of the American theater.
