This book was written in 1983. A much more comprehensive volume was published in 2002 and a second updated edition in 2006. The title is Motorcycle Handling and Chassis Design - the art and science.
It has over 5 times the content of the 1984 edition.

About the Author
Richard S. Quimby is an Associate Professor of physics at Worcester Polytechnic Institute.��He�earned a BS in EE/Physics at Clarkson College of Technology in 1975 and a PhD in Physics at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, in 1979.�He has been actively involved in research relating to photonics devices such as fiber lasers and fiber amplifiers since the 1980's.� His work has resulted in approximately 35 publications, as well as three invited conference presentations. He also is a contributor to the book FLUORIDE GLASS FIBER OPTICS (Academic Press 1991).

Best intro to photonics for electrical engineers

It has always been difficult to find a book that is a good introduction to photonics, since the existing books in the field either aim to high and get bogged down in mathematics or aim too low and end up being hobbyist books on the subject. The audience for this book is the college undergraduate who is likely a nonphysics major - most likely an engineering student - who is looking for an introduction to the subject. The other audience would be the professional who wants to come up to speed in photonics by learning the fundamentals in a format that is accessible to him/her. You should already be familiar with your freshman physics, specifically mechanics, electricity and magnetism, waves, and a dash of modern physics. Also, knowledge of differential and integral calculus is assumed plus ordinary differential equations. Maxwell's equations are discussed, but there are no derivations involved.

The author makes sure that mathematical concepts do not get in the way of the physical concepts. He does this by giving physical arguments that lead to an intuitive understanding wherever possible. However, sufficient mathematical detail is included so that you should get a good understanding of the quantitative nature of the field as well. The combined coverage of photonics and lasers in a single book is unusual. However, it does lend itself to a better understanding of waveguiding and optical communications, which rely on an understanding of both fields.

The thing I like best about the book is the abundance of numerical examples with detailed solutions and electrical analogs used as illustrations that are found throughout. It really helps those of us with electrical engineering backgrounds who feel we really don't get a subject unless we can quantify something. The examples usually lead the way to solving the included exercises, but the one shortcoming of the book is that there are no solutions to either even or odd problems included.

If you are a student, I highly recommend this book even if you are using Saleh's Photonics as a text. This book will give you a clearer understanding for the quantitative issues.

Like Reading a Gripping Novella

I bought this book several years ago for reference and yesterday I really needed it. I needed to understand certain nonlinear effects in optical fibers: pronto! I have a theoretical physicist background, but I'm not an expert in FO. I'm quite comfortable, indeed prefer, the mathematical framework of coupled NLS or Manakov-PMD equations, but it's much easier to navigate the various approximating assumptions in those formalisms when you possess a clear intuitive understanding of the physics.

Chapter 9 contained most of the background I was looking for. Moreover, it was like reading a gripping novella--I simply couldn't put it down. Nearly every sentence was a revelation. At no point did I feel like I had to slog through the explanations. That chapter covers everything from dielectric distortion, SHG, wave-mixing, Kerr effect, and even optical solitons; all in a highly illuminating way (if I can use that expression). Quimby has a superb writing style that manages to maintain a delicate balance between appealing to physical intuition and yet provide just enough math to convince the reader of technical consistency with Maxwell's equations. The plentiful and perspicuous diagrams that complement the text (roughly one per page) are just as valuable as Quimby's writing style. Truly, a great introductory text and reference work.

Some disappointing omissions include such things as phase-conjugate mirrors and superlensing (negative refractive index), but these topics could be added comfortably in a new edition.

Must keep in your hand if you want to learn about Drupal 8

This is a really, really good book for a beginner to an intermediate, stretching to an advanced user. The book covers a broad topic such as how to use, programing, and the other Drupal stuffs (see the TOC). I am a Drupal developer who understands Drupal 7 and now learning a basic programming manner in Drupal 8. I feel this is something like a great Drupal 8 textbook.

Note: First I purchased the "paper" book then Amazon offer for Kindle for a few dollars. Of course I also purchased Kindle version.

Get yourself productive with Drupal 8

The Drupal 8 Development Cookbook is great for a number of different types of readers, including a:
* New D8 site builder who just “wants to get something done” that can’t be done through the GUI
* D7 developer and want to learn how to accomplish things in D8
* D8 developer who wants to round out their understanding with practical solutions
* Newbie to D8!

The strength of this book is the code “recipes” that provide complete code solutions to common (and not so common) tasks that can be quickly implemented and easily modified to meet your needs.

If you’re comfortable with object oriented PHP, Drupal 8, and the new concepts and frameworks that support it, you can easily find the recipes you need, understand how they work, and get productive quickly. If you’re not so comfortable, this book has also got you covered: Chapter 1, “UP AND RUNNING WITH DRUPAL 8” will get you started preparing your environment, installing and running D8, and understanding of common admin tasks you’ll need. Then, as you follow along the code examples you’ll come to understand how it all comes together. Don’t expect deep dives into concepts or theories or “hand holding”, rather you’ll be getting concise real-world solutions.

With Drupal 8, the Drupal community moved from a “not invented here” thinking, eschewing 3rd party technology, to a “proudly found elsewhere” attitude, choosing best of breed technologies with which to build and enhance Drupal 8. This is not only great for Drupal 8 but also easier for new Drupal developers to jump into D8 as it uses many of the same technologies they’re used to, and great for existing Drupal developers to introduce them to these technologies which will make them better developers. Glaman covers Composer, PSR-4, Twig, YAML, and of course Symfony.

Besides covering all the common coding tasks like working with pages, fields, blocks, content types, i18n, entities, etc., this book tackles the trickier aspects of Drupal 8 such as configuration management, plugins, and web services, and makes note of some of the gotchas, and explains where these are likely to be headed as D8 matures.

Finally, the two CLI tools for Drupal, Drush and Drupal Console, are covered. Besides the helpful Drupal management commands, Glaman covers scaffolding code via Console. Given the boilerplate code, directory structure, “mundane” tasks OO, PSR-4 and Symfony require, this is a feature you’re going to want to embrace. Too new to be included in the book, try the “--learning” flag on generate command to “generate a verbose code output” which means you’ll get the scaffold code with plenty of descriptive comments.

I was the technical reviewer for this book as it was being written, and Glaman showed not only a strong proficiency for coding in Drupal 8, but also the “why”, as he’s been following the continued development of Drupal 8 closely.

Antoine Vanner has survived military coups, a guerrilla war, storms at sea and life in mangrove swamps, tropical forest, offshore oil-platforms and the boardroom. He has lived and worked long-term in eight countries, has travelled widely in all continents except Antarctica and is fluent in three languages. He has a passion for nineteenth-century political and military history and has a deep understanding of what was the cutting-edge technology of the time. The British Navy cruises on steam, not sails, in this Victorian-era series

I read "Britannia's Wolf" and enjoyed it on several levels. First, and to my mind most importantly, I considered it a "good read," one that gave me enjoyment commensurate with the time invested. I'm a nautical genre fan, and have read many of the series set in at the peak of the age of sail and the conflicts between Britain and France in the 18th and early 19th centuries. As much as I love them, it was refreshing to begin a series that is set in a different time period and with different players (aside from Britain) in the Great Game of later 19th Century national rivalries and colonial imperialism. The battle scenes are vivid and showcase a different form of naval warfare from the exchange of volleys at a cable's length or closer of the wooden ship era, one that is inching closer to the long-distance duels of the early 20th Century. I particularly appreciated the way the author dealt with the rapidly evolving technology of the time, which was showcased particularly in the small arms, and more interesting to me (because I know less about them) the naval artillery, with muzzle-loaders still in use next to rapid-fire breechloaders.

Nicholas Dawlish is the British officer at the center of this novel which promises to be the first of a series chronicling a career that has been outlined in the author's mind. He is of his times, a Victorian, and American readers should bear with such traits as his then-proper concerns of class and place in matters of the heart. He is an embodiment of "stiff upper lip," but bears some internal conflicts which will help humanize him as the series continues. And he is ingenious and unrelenting in a fight, virtues that serve both him and the reader well when he's in conflict.

The best novel set during the Russian - Turkish war of 1877 that you will ever read!

This novel is the first in Vanner's Dawlish Chronicles series. Like some historical novel series, we are introduced to the main character, not at the beginning of his career, but at a pivotal point in his life. Throughout this novel, the author leaves us clues about Dawlish's previous adventures.

Nicholas Dawlish has spent much of his life as an officer in the British Navy. Since he was not born into privilege, he has reached a point in his career when his prospects for advancement are few.

Now, Dawlish has left the British Navy and taken a commission in the Ottoman Empire's navy. The position pays twice his British Navy pay. Additionally, this commission will allow him to command a warship in battle. If he does well it may improve his chances for advancement if he should return to Britain.

The Ottoman Empire is at war with Russia. The Tsar wants to become a naval power in the Mediterranean Sea. Dawlish needs to use the meager Ottoman fleet to keep the Russians bottled up in the Black Sea. And he needs to disrupt the shipping that brings needed supplied to the advancing Russian Army.

Unfortunately, the Ottoman Empire is rife with religious and political intrigue. Although Dawlish has developed his navy into a dedicated group of sailors who would follow him into hell, he slowly realizes that his superiors are not to be trusted.

In the end, Dawlish and his sailors are fighting skirmishes on land as the Russian Army advances on Istanbul. If he and his men can delay the advancing Russians, the British Navy might take an interest and step in to stop the Russian onslaught.

And in the middle of the fighting, Dawlish needs to save Florence Morton, his love interest.

For me, I found the beginning of the novel slow going. The author uses a lot of Turkish words: place names, character names, military ranks, ship names, and some basic vocabulary. While this adds authenticity to the story, I found the plot a little hard to follow at first.

I liked Nicholas Dawlish. He is a realistic character who makes mistakes and has flaws.

I liked the battle scenes. They were exciting and well written.

For me, this novel was a good military fiction novel.

The Tom Clancy of historic naval fiction

Antoine Vanner is the Tom Clancy of historic naval fiction. This is a techno-thriller in the true Clancy nuts-and-bolts style, except that it is placed in the late nineteenth century, during the transition from sail to steam, instead of in the nuclear-powered present. Where the followers of C. S. Forester and Patrick O’Brian luxuriate in the crack and rattle of canvas, and the niceties of getting a wind-driven ship into battle, author Vanner revels in the throwing power of cannon, propulsive power of engines, and weight of armor plating. It is all very detailed, tremendously impressive, and very convincing.

The same depth of research has gone into the background of the decline and fall of the Ottoman Empire. Vanner hurls his protagonist, Nicholas Dawlish, into the forefront of the bloodiest battles between the Christian Russian invaders and the Moslem Turks. While Britain is theoretically neutral, and the Turks are international lepers after the wholesale butchery of Bulgarian Christians, it is important to British commercial interests that the Russian Czar does not get the chance to dominate British trade routes by occupying Constantinople.

Therefore Dawlish, vulnerable because he so ambitious for advancement in the Royal Navy, is coerced into signing up with the Ottoman Navy. His mission: to seize a gunboat, and wreak havoc on the Russian supply lines in the Black Sea. After that, the action is hot and hectic, rather unusually spaced between the quarterdeck and the stokers in the lowest hold. Though they succeed in an unexpected way, the approach to the story provides an insight into Dawlish’s job, rank, and state of mind.

His mission then becomes rather unusual. He has to place the ironclad’s cannon on land, in the path of the Russian thrust on Istanbul. Once this appallingly difficult task carried out, he is impelled toward Plevna, where the Turks are making their last despairing stand, to rescue the woman he is coming to love, along with her misguided Nightingale-type mistress. He gets to her side, only to face overwhelming forces. Bloodshed—much bloodshed—follows. But, thankfully, while Vanner is describing a really brutal part of history, he does not wallow in violence. Intelligently, he leaves the worst of the atrocities to the reader’s imagination.

The major part of the story happens between December 1877, when Plevna falls, and the compact between the major powers that settled the war politically in March 1788. In between, is winter—a winter that is unimaginably brutal, and yet the writer makes the reader experience every detail of the horror. What this reader came out with is a huge admiration of the soldiers and seamen who underwent the ordeal, along with a contempt of the politicians who engineered it.

The motif throughout is Dawlish’s growing love affair. The social strictures surrounding it are authentic of the age, as anyone who has watched Downton Abbey will attest. The resolution is rather hastily engineered, however, which is the reason this review gets four stars rather than the five it really demands. The moment when Dawlish succumbs to his better feelings deserved more space. Otherwise, a hugely recommended book, particularly for technically minded maritime fiction fans, and anyone who was addicted to Clancy. Most unusually, I was so engrossed by the driving force of the story that I didn’t pause to hit google or even look up an encyclopedia to find out the background of what Vanner was describing so vividly.

Britannia’s Wolf, should be a bestseller, and it is an indictment of the traditional publishing world that it is an Indie book.

His other major works, The World Order and Secrets of the Federal Reserve are a MUST for the NON-Programmed or Deluded who are interested in REAL HISTORY, not bankster satanic history that's spoon fed to us throughout our lives. I can't recommend Eustace Mullins works more.

Extremely significant

This work has been a profound influence on my own work. Written as a continuation of Mullins' research on the Federal Reserve system, commissioned by Ezra Pound, this delves into the Rothschild World system behind World affairs:

Chapter 1 focuses on the Rothschilds, the City of London, and the expansion of the power structures these people set up, which form the basis of the present World Order.

Chapter 2 shows how Soviet communism was in reality an extension of international finance capitalism.

Chapter 3 shows how World War II was a managed conflict.

Chapter 4 shows how the American aristocracy was/is an extension of the Rothschild empire.

Chapter 5 delves into the CIA and British intelligence, and it's ties to the power structures already established.

Chapter 6 looks into the political influence of the Bechtel corporation.

Chapter 7 looks into the network of control established by various interlocking tax-exempt foundations.

Chapter 8 delves into a broad, historical overview of this hegemony of parasitism.

My only problem with Eustace Mullins is that he made mistakes. However, he did transmit to the American people Ezra Pound's knowledge of the history of the parasitic class and their techniques of control. Pound unfortunately flirted with bigotry, but he did not make the kind of mistakes Mullins did, and was absolutely correct on the subject of international finance.

About the Author
Harriet Ziefert is a prolific children’s book author and the founder and publisher of Blue Apple Books, an award-winning children’s publishing house. A pioneer in the leveled-reader genre, Ziefert has written numerous Step into Reading books, including the bestselling Sleepy Dog.

Norman Gorbaty was a leader in graphic design in a career spanning over fifty years, most notably as the art director for the legendary advertising agency Benton & Bowles, where he designed iconic ads for Crest, Post cereals, and the IBM Selectric typewriter and groundbreaking covers for Time magazine. After he trained at Yale, Gorbaty’s early career as a fine artist saw his work in the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. Mitchell is to race headfirst into an enormous haystack with a kid who's intent on finding not one, but probably a dozen, needles. In Can Love Last? Mitchell's boyish curiosity and profound intelligence virtually set fire to the subject, both enlightening and challenging his readers. Mitchell's premise is that romance, in its many forms, is key to a life worth living.

Why, then, does the sizzle so often fizzle, especially in committed relationships? More importantly, what forces compel humans to actively douse romantic flames in favor of more "stable" love? Mitchell's probings of these and other questions take him on a fascinating journey through times and topics historical as well as contemporary. When New York University professor and popular psychoanalysis theorist Mitchell died in December 2000, he left behind a robust body of work that made Freudian theories accessible to all. It's not surprising, then, that this postmortem work should have broad appeal. A combination of clinical case studies, psychoanalytical thought and practical advice, Mitchell's riff on the fragility and necessity of romantic love is written with warmth and intelligence. He manages to simplify some of Freud's most complex theories and give them new significance for those who wonder why love is often a battlefield. Real-life examples, taken from his practice, are an invaluable addition. In a section on guilt, for example, he briefly describes how Freud considered the emotion to be "the linchpin of our ascent from the bestial to the civilized," then brings in the work of Viennese-born analyst Melanie Klein and concludes with the story of "Will," whose tendency toward feeling guilty created havoc with his romantic relationships. By mixing the case study method, so common in self-help books, with scholarly insight, Mitchell creates a work on romance that is rich and multilayered, giving the individual stories more weight and the intellectual commentary more humanity. In his conclusion, Mitchell writes like a loving father penning a wedding day message to his child, gently advising that romance isn't about "a labored struggle to contrive novelty," but instead about tolerance and understanding. It's common advice, but given the rest of the work's depth, humor and rigor, these familiar words take on new, and much welcomed, meaning. This rather dry academic treatise on romantic love was written by a well-regarded clinician and supervising analyst at the William Alanson White Institute. Mitchell, who died in 2000, was the author of several books including Freud and Beyond, which he wrote with his wife Margaret Black. Popular culture would have us believe that the combination of romance and true lasting love is an oxymoron. Mitchell examines the tension between the ideas of love and romance, and shows how sexuality, illusion, aggression, guilt, control, and commitment interact to contribute to this tension. He also describes the different risks involved in both stable and new love. While drawing heavily on Freud, he examines romance and love from many different psychoanalytic viewpoints. Cases from his practice are described to illustrate his discussion. The scenario of the cocktail party toward the end of the book is especially clear in conveying different theories of consciousness. The best book I have ever read on Love

The best book I have ever read on Love. This is not bulls*** about "rules", or "things you have to do", neither is "self-help" or "how to fix yourself". Stephen Mitchell was one of the most important relational psychoanalysts, and he made the most profund, deep, serious analysis on how our unconscious works when we fall in love. This book is not hopeful, it doesn't present a typical "happy ending", it is realistic. It is shocking, but so truthful, you will be greateful and more prepared for your relationships.

Not a rhetorical question any more

Can Love Last is a question lovers often ask. At first I thought the book jumped around a lot. It doesn't. Instead, Mitchell looks at the question from many angles, like holding a diamond up to the light and turning it to examine the quality through multiple facets. He mixes true character stories with practical wisdom. Can Love Last? is not just a rhetorical question or a theme for easy listening ballads. Sometimes I bring past memories and judgments of previous relationships into my current amazing relationship. This book helped me see how I can let go of my stories and focus on what is important for this relationship to last as I desire.

Not fade away

One of the stressors of my life, and I suspect of many other people's lives is the nagging feeling that somehow we are approaching love wrongly. On the one hand, we want to experience it and we want to believe that the experience is real. On the other hand, our own experience and the experience of others around us inclines us to feel as though it is a little bit foolish past the age of 16 to believe *too* much in the idea of enduring passion.

Does passion always fade? Do we need to choose relationships at the base of the pyramid of needs-- passionless but sustaining, predictable but safe? Can we ever sustain that passion that we feel at the beginning of a relationship?

What Mitchell says (with quiet authority that makes me believe him) is that yes, we can, if we are brave enough to really want that to happen. What he argues is that passion, while desirable, is ultimately quite threatening and that it takes both personal mastery and courage to be willing to let it into your life. Mitchell asserts that it is not romance which is the illusion, it is safety which is the illusion. Romance is the thing which brings the reality of the world to us-- with all its danger and complexity. Safety is a veil which we throw over others potentially close to us to keep them from coming close enough to hurt.

Mitchell created a readable book which should appeal to professionals in the field as well as ordinary folk looking for some answers to complicated problems. He builds his arguments carefully using a combination of prior work and original thinking derived from his practice and patients.

Very impressive, thought provoking, and blessedly free from overly complicated language.
