Incomplete story.

Very Compelling

So first off, I did receive a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review, but in no way does that affect the opinions stated herein.

So dang, I was really surprised with how much I liked this book! It's mainly about a dragon named Darnuil who has to deal with the responsibilities of being the prince of the dragons during a huge war with demons (by the way dragons have lost their winged form and are now more humanoid). But you also follow a couple of other characters as well, so you get more of a wide view. There are fairies, humans, trolls, dragons, and wizards, but they all have their own unique twists that I found really interesting. I think that is one of the things I loved the most was how compelling this novel was. I wouldn't say its a quick read because I did spend a lot of time reading it, but I couldn't put it down. I finished it in three days or so.

Darnuir as a main character definitely started off on the more annoying side, but after he gets reset (which is in the blurb so not a spoiler), he gets so much better and grows and changes so much. I really liked the side characters as well, and I think the author did a good job of making me feel particular ways toward each of them without being blatant about whether they were good or evil characters.

In terms of plot, the first 2/3rds was pretty predictable in a good way. I felt good about how well I was making my "guesses," but then toward the end I started getting more shocked by the things that were happening making me really excited to see what comes next.

I think a thing I found weird was the love development between Darnuir and his interest. It seemed to be pretty instant, and I thought it a bit unrealistic to be so totally head over heels for someone so quickly. Thankfully this plot line wasn't a focus of the story, so it didn't bother me too much. Also with most self-published works, there were some little errors mostly in the second half. Like, a character's thoughts wouldn't be italicized or a word would say form when it was supposed to be from, but I've read so many traditionally published works that have waaay more mistake than this.

Overall, very fun to read about such a fascinating world. Will certainly be continuing on with the series whenever the second book come out.

Really Fun Read

"The Dragon’s Blade: The Reborn King" is the debut from author Michael R. Miller. A sweeping epic fantasy focusing on a world terrorized by hordes of demons; it is a place torn by continual warfare. An alliance between all the races (dragons, humans, and fairies) the only defense to the limitless hordes of their otherworldly foes. But now one of the alliance’s most powerful wizards has turned traitor and a new enemy leader has arisen, even the mighty dragons forced to give ground before their hated foes. A state of affairs which the Crown Prince of the Dragons cannot accept . . . will not accept!

As heir to the dragon peoples (In this world, dragons do not soar the skies in bestial form anymore, but have slowly transformed into earthbound humanoids.), Prince Darnuir is the second most influential individual in the kingdom; his opinion openly voiced in all high council matters. And with his frustration about the war and especially the leadership of his father mounting, he believes (as most youth’s do) that his ideas are superior to his father’s, that his leadership would be better than his father’s. But when the demons launch their attack on the dragon capital, the prince’s plans turn to dust, leaving him on the edge of death. The only way to save his life to perform the dangerous rebirthing spell, which will leave Darnuir as a mere babe in human hands!

In my opinion, fantasy books can be categorized according to their main focus. Some are action and adventure tales, where the thrills and chills come often and the characters are only developed enough to give you someone to rout for and against. Other novels are serious books with real life issues developed and dealt with in a fairy tale setting; the action and adventure only enough to enliven the serious narrative. And then there are character driven stories, where one person is carefully crafted, molded from inexperienced youth to good or evil adult; the numerous events and plots revolving around this character’s life like a hurricane around its eye. And "The Dragon’s Blade: The Reborn King" is definitely the latter type of novel.

Here the story is Darnuir’s tale. He is the fallen heir of the dragons, reborn and reared by surrogate parents; the narrative tied to his journey from prince to unknowing child then back again; his destiny to someday take up the Dragon’s Blade, magical sword of the Dragon Kings, and drive back the demons. Along his path, many people walk with him at different points, helping to mold him into the dragon he becomes, but he is the eye of this hurricane; all others drawn to him, responding to his irresistible pull.

As for the world around Darnuir, Mr. Miller has put together a fairly standard fantasy setting with familiar faces: humans, demons, dragons, trolls, fairies, and wizards, to name a few. All these races are well developed, lovingly created by an author who definitely puts his own twists on each. (Dragons are humanoids with magical powers; fairies are not tiny Tinker Bells.) The magic filling the world is well thought out, as there is a price for it and its use; magic swords, magical jewels and other magical artifacts being tools to allow the use of more magic or to store memories or for other tasks. And this place is vast with an ancient history, mysterious lore, and engaging mythology.

My favorite part of the book was seeing the proud, self-assured Darnuir reduced to a babe then grow up in another setting. Guess I’m just a sucker for this type of story, but it was interesting to witness how a different environment, different parents, and different upbringing could change so many things about the Dragon Prince yet not affect other qualities at all.

As for my least favorite element of the story, it would be the romantic plots. As a grumpy, old man (Not really, I’m only around forty-years-old and still have small kids who keep me young at heart!), all the YA romance can get fairly eye-rolling at times. Sure, I remember falling madly in love with someone whom I had seen only once, but I also recall how every one of those love-at-first-sight romances turned out. So whenever that sort of thing happens in novels, I tend to start skimming pages, not because the writing is poor but because I just do not wish to go there again. And in "The Dragon’s Blade", we have several romantic interludes for old Darnuir which I personally could have done without. Not saying others might not enjoy them however.

Quick paced, surprise packed, and filled with fantasy goodness, this debut by Michael R. Miller showcases his talent for crafting a candy-coated, page turner. It really is just good, old-fashioned fun, which mixes in enough mysteries and unresolved plots to beg the question: “When does the next book come out?”

The Dragon’s Blade is a modern take on epic fantasy, reminiscent of classical works of fantasy, but without the heavy tones and language. As such, it has most of their strengths and hardly any of their weaknesses.

We follow Darnuir, Prince of Dragons and his adventures and misadventures in the war against the demon hordes. These dragons are now confined to humanoid forms and no longer can take their bestial forms. They have some advantages left over though. They are stronger, faster and have more stamina than humans and seem to have an aversion to beards and facial hair. They are also quite arrogant and Darnuir is especially so. Heir to the throne, he chafes at this father’s rule and is convinced that he has the solution to end the war once and for all. He is also not particularly fond of humans. He longs to rule and before he knows it , events transpire with the result that he is granted his wish but certainly not it the way he would have wanted it.

In the war, he is badly hurt by poison and although loyal wizard Brackendon tries his best to save him, his only recourse is to perform a rebirthing spell, he having drawn too much on his magic or “Cascade Energy”, for it is far easier to destroy than to create, since the cost on the body and mind is less. Even with this, this last act of desperation causes Brackendon to ‘break’. Darnuir is left as a babe with humans, hunters actually, who not too long ago hunted dragons.

We get little glimpses into his childhood and soon he is come of age and Brackendon returns just in time to tell him about who he really is. He can now carry the Dragon’s Blade, a fearsome very lifelike blade that bonds with him and is even able to ‘breathe fire’. It also acts as a conduit for ‘Cascade Energy’ much like the wizards staffs. Darnuir now is a different dragon, he is more humanised and since receiving the blade and having memories of his past self mesh with his present messages he is at war within himself. Which side will win? Can he ever really lead the dragons?

The author has a way of being concise and efficient with his wordlbuilding and prose which allows him to convey all the necessary information, thoughts and characterisation without being preachy and ponderous. This method of showing instead of telling is admirable and impressive. The characters are just the way I like them; multi-dimensional and flawed and since this is a character driven story, this is a strongpoint.

The plot is pretty straightforward with a few surprises or twists . Darnuir has to try to unite thefaeries, humans and dragons to stand against the demon horde. It’s well paced, full of action and adventure and a pretty cool, well thought out magic system. The users of magic (wizards) pay a price each time they use ‘Cascade Energy’ which is why they need staffs to siphon off some of the taint and so slow down the damage to their bodies and minds. If the parent tree for their staffs are damaged , the staff becomes useless and they have to find another staff or conduit.

The demons are also really cool. I especially like the spectres who are the leaders of the lesser more feral demons. They are able to weave in and out of shadows which makes them formidable in battle. I’m really interested to see how the different factions will turn out. I sense dissent amongst the troops and can’t wait to see who comes out on top and what that will mean for the humans, faeries and dragons.

Overall, I really enjoyed The Dragon’s Blade. I can honestly say I have no problems apart from not being too attached to Darnuir as yet. There are so many intriguing elements and I have a feeling we will be seeing even more fantastical creatures emerging in the sequel. With it’s fast pace, incredibly concise worldbuilding, action and quite unique magic system, The Dragon’s Blade is a thoroughly entertaining and immersive read. It is a perfect introduction to new series and a must read for fantasy aficionados, and is suitable for those who want to try out epic fantasy but are afraid of those with a huge word count. Fantasy lovers the world around should definitely pick this one up.

High-quality, and not just for healthcare

I skipped this book (plus a stinker by Crofts) in my original round-up of Tableau titles - eight books in total - and would not want potential readers to repeat my mistake, expecting the book to be healthcare-specific, and not knowing how well-produced and visually attractive it is. Indeed, "Tableau for Healthcare" is the best-looking book out of the ten Tableau titles I have seen - "Tableau for Dummies" and "Tableau 9: The Official Guide" are nearly as pretty, the rest are not even close - and it is a very good Tableau introduction, on par with "Tableau for Dummies" and "Communicating Data with Tableau". If you are a Tableau beginner, these three books are the only ones you need to consider. Each one has a different style, so one's choice is a matter of personal preference: get all three, and see which one(s) you like.

PS. Should you consider doing Tableau certification, be warned: you have six months to take the exam. The warning is easy to miss - compared with that you get when taking a Qlik or Microsoft cert exam with Pearson VUE - and the exam's shelf life is half as long as Pearson's, as if missed deadlines (and free money for Loyalist, Tableau's no-name testing partner) were part of the business plan. I unwittingly missed the deadline - as it happens, by a single day - and was told to get lost by both Loyalist and Tableau. I have had a chance to observe Qlik's response to a similar customer request, and that was simply helpful; Tableau's, on the other hand, was North Korea meets Kafka. (Engage with Loyalist on behalf of some test taker? They cannot even be bothered to fix the errors in their sample exam). Don't get into this situation.

Very good book; would like to have seen more in depth discussion of calculated fields, level of detail, writing custom equations, and some of the thought processes surrounding view and function selections. For example, when is it better to use groups, over sets, over filters, etc.

A fine book...

This is a fine book. Here are some reasons why:

1. They book will walk you step by step as to what you need to do with regards to producing a viz. You will not be confused as of what to do.
~ In contrast another book that I am going through - not a Tableau book - says things like "Drag and drop X." and you are like "Okay. Where?" - because there are multiple places you can do that.

2. The book covers items that I have not (so far) seen elsewhere (e.g. the Table Lens, Deviation chart) and seems to be worth knowing.

3. The step-by-step walk through visuals are spot-on.
~ Again - you will not be confused as of what you are supposed to do next. Description and chart are supplied.

4. Overall aesthetics of the book are quite good. Its in full color. Techie books often are not like this.

5. The end of each chapter has this section titled HDVizoom where all the steps for everything you did within the chapter to create X or Y are laid. So if you need to review how to create something and don't want to go through the whole chapter... just go here. Very nice.

All that said, one minor knock against it.

1. Its terse. The book will tell you exactly what you need to know regarding something, like say what the blue and the green pills are but may not elaborate any additional bit on the why's of the pills. So you won't find say an excursus on this or that topic so if you are scratching your head wanting to know more... but then again this is Tableau for Healthcare so a bunch of the people that pick up this book might be physicians, nurses, pa's, etc., and they may not want to get bogged down in details that an IT guy might care about.

... which actually lead me to another pro with the book: This is about the healthcare world. It is about real world stuff. You are creating visuals that have to do with actual hospital stuff - you are not simply creating a chart of some generic store with widgets sold.

I started to implement oAuth solution at work and I struggled to find any good references esp the ones that would take you from point a to point b. most references out there would give you only a part of the solution and some solutions would conflict with one another. what a mess

this book made everything clear for me. the book has in action approach, which means that instead of just giving high level overview or different pieces of information, the author builds entire solution with you step by step. I had no problems following the examples and I def have much better understanding of oAuth solutions and I was able to apply it at work. So I highly recommend this book

This book is extremely well written and easy to follow. It includes actionable coding exercises to help you build your own OAuth servers and clients. It really helped me to understand the protocol end-to-end and how to implement it securely in the context of the wider cloud authentication ecosystem.

This book is now required reading for all my identity and access management engineers. Highly recommended!

The companion site for this book, the one holding the supporting training files, is not available. When contacted via live chat, the supplier had no information on WHEN it will be available.

The book is a well organized teaching companion. However, it contains the typical academic text errors.

It is recommended that you wait until the second edition is published, to allow time to 1) populate the Web Site with the supporting "Companion" material (training files) and to 2) correct the errors in the text.
