Hischak’s aim “is to describe every Broadway production (play, musical, revival, and specialty) over the past eighty-eight years,” and he hits a bull’s-eye with this comprehensive catalog of more than 14,000 Broadway productions. Concise entries provide distinctive details about each production, including plot, critical reaction, cast, and characters. In the interest of space, the listings of cast members and titles of songs in musicals are representative rather than complete. An alphabetical catalog of productions from A la Carte (1927) to The Zulu and the Zayda (1965) includes shows (and revivals) presented from 1919 to 2007. According to Hischak, 1919 was the year by which most New York theaters were located in the area around Times Square, as they are now. Because of their significance in theater history, some 600 shows presented before 1919 are also included. Another feature of this weighty work is a two-part chronology of productions consisting first of a list of notable shows from 1749 to 1919 and then a summary of every Broadway season from 1919 to 2007. Although there is little detail in this chronology, each entry does provide the number of performances for each production, and having a quick list for each season is very helpful. There is also an alphabetically-arranged index by personal name and show title. The performing arts are ephemeral, and documentation is essential if their history is to be preserved. This rich resource supplies the necessary facts needed when embarking on a study of the American theater. I also bought this book after seeing it in UnofficialSquaw.com's G.N.A.R. movie. This book is well written, easy to understand, and even provides great pictures to help you rip up Squaw's terrain. Even if you are not planning on shredding the lines in this book; there is enough to read for everyone to be entertained. Shane McConkey's bonus chapter in the end is enough to make this book worth buying. A must for anyone who wants to see what Squaw really has to offer.

New Ruppel edition an asset for RT student or staff!

While I have not read the entire work, I have so far found this new edition of PFT's easier to read and understand than the past edition; it also appears more comprehensive. My only complaint is that it is in paperback, and if used as a reference, will be worn quickly!

Great textbook, Excellent reference

Gregg Ruppel's 9th Edition text has already been useful in our Pulmonary Function Laboratory, and now I am writing a hospital-based course of study for my staff members based upon this text. Since our laboratory uses plethysmography, this is a very useful reference work. Some of our Respiratory Therapists plan to sit for the CPFT board exam, and I believe this text should provide enough information for confidently taking the NBRC exam. For labs wishing to meet American Thoracic Society (ATS) and European Respiratory Society (ERS) standards, this text should provide excellent guidance.

If you are trying to learn java on your own, I do not recommend this one unless you are already an experienced programmer in object oriented languages.

It is very tough, and would be impossible to follow for someone new to programming.

Patricia A. Ireland, CMT, AHDI-F, has been active in the field of medical transcription since 1968, both as a multispecialty practitioner and as an instructor. She has been a medical transcription instructor since the 1970s, has taught online medical transcription programs since 2000, and has co-authored four medical transcription textbooks for Cengage Learning. Shoud Be Bundled With Audio CD

This book is used in Ontario at Ontario Colleges for Beginning Medical Transcription. It is critical to have the Audio CD in order to participate in the course. Because it was not bundled with The Student Edition Audio Transcription Exercises on CD to Accompany Hillcrest Medical Center Beginning Medical Transcription 7th Edition, there were 35 students SCRAMBLING with a teacher to get the course going without delay. Amazon should work with the publisher to have this CD included with the textbook. The directors at several Ontario Colleges would likely appreciate this as well as they were called to work with students individually to locate the audio CD for them.

There are almost no Medical Transcription jobs!!!!

Do NOT purchase anything for Medical Transcription!! Please!! This is an almost defunct career choice. As a 37+ year veteran in this field, almost every job has been absorbed by the new computer policies of the Obamacare regime. Almost every transcription job has been cut. There are no jobs, so it's not wise to invest in any tools to do this job. Do yourself a favor and don't waste your money on anything related to this field. It is just about impossible to get a job and there are people with YEARS of experience all over the country who are out of work. I know of one facility that went from 40 transcriptions, down to 3, and that is just one facility!!

At what price?

I know the author, and the contents of this book are first rate - The Best! What I don't understand ... Why won't anyone reveal which edition this is? The latest version is the 6th. I have seen the 4th and 5th editions for sale elsewhere on this website, so I *assume* this book is the 6th. And why are prices being shown at $70+ for new and $65+ for used? Foundation Center sells this book for $39.95 list price. So, once more, why would you pay $65 or $70 for a $40 book? I am confused, because usually Amazon is the home of bargains and awesome low prices. Is there something special about this particular book? Shouldn't someone explain that to potential buyers like me? If the difference between books is hard/soft cover, I encourage you to buy soft cover and apply the cost difference in constructive ways.

Breathtaking Overview

Dan has created a must-read for anyone interested in the topic of doping in sport. It's easy to get caught up in the doping scandal of the moment, whether it's Marion Jones, or Roger Clemens, or Floyd Landis. Dan provides much-needed perspective, by giving us more than 100 years of doping history. With this perspective, we can see that no decade in the modern era lacks a doping scandal and no sport is immune from doping.

The book should be mandatory reading for every media talking head. Too often, we take the most recent doping story du jour, and attack the alleged doper as single-handedly corrupting our youth and destroying sport as we know it. Dan points out a bigger truth: doping is out there, every athlete has the opportunity to dope, and we fail to understand the problem if we focus on demonizing whatever athlete is currently connected with doping in the headlines.

In order for Dan to give us this kind of 50,000 foot view, he's had to keep each of his doping stories short and to the point. Often, I found this frustrating -- just as Dan got me hooked on one doping story, he'd move on to another. Many of these stories deserve their own books (and quite a few DO have their own books), but I think Dan's book serves a different purpose. It reminds us that these stories are NOT unique, that doping is now woven into the fabric of sport.

A must for any sports fan

Dope provides a complete and engaging look at the role doping has played in sports over the years. Until very recently, most governing organizations and governments actively encouraged doping amongst its athletes. As pressure mounted, these organizations served platitudes but turned a blind eye to the actions of its athletes and coaches thus tacitly endorsing the practice. Finally in recent years, we are seeing the beginning of a real culture shift. We have come a long way in just a short time.

Mr. Rosen covers all sports from Olympic to US professional sports providing detailed information on the BALCO scandal. There is just enough science to understand the narrative but the author is able to steer clear of sounding like a medical textbook.

Given the backdrop of the current Olympic Games and some of the stories surrounding mysterious changing passports and other suspicious activities this book could not be better timed.

Instead of leaving the reader suspicious of any athletic accomplishment, Mr. Rosen leaves us hopeful that a clean sport is quickly descending on most athletic fields.

a timely and relevant book

"Dope: A History..." is a well-balanced and informative book that brings clarity and perspective to an oft and all too easily misunderstood topic. Given the spate of doping scandals that consistently hit the news these days, it is timely and relevant. Daniel M. Rosen's writing is concise yet easy to follow, offering a wealth of historically grounded facts and interesting anecdotes. This book should be required reading for the professional - athlete, coach or official - as well as the lay person.
