A well-told story of a somewhat neglected period

It's not an easy thing to try and tell the story of 12th century Venice. Most of her chroniclers, romantic adventurers and great artists are still in centuries to come, and the contemporary evidence rather sparse, with most historical personages little more than names on a paper.
But Madden does tell it, and tells it very well. He traces the titular rise of Venice (into a maritime empire) from the chrysobull granting tax-exemptions given by Alexius I after the war against the Normans in 1081, to Venetian gains of even greater privileges in Syria after their naval expedition in 1122-24, to its culmination with the Fourth Crusade and their acquisition of "a quarter and a half quarter of the Roman Empire". Madden tells this story mostly by using legal documents (real estate transactions, court proceedings, loan contracts etc) as they relate to the Dandolo family ( Enrico Dandolo himself, his uncle and namesake the Patriarch of Grado, and his father Vitale, a close associate of two doges, especially).
You'd think a narrative based on such sources would be dry and monotonous, but Madden does a rather elegant job in making it interesting and readable.
If it's hard to tell the story of Venice of these times, it's even harder to tell it without casting Venice in a negative light ( after all, the Fourth Crusade is considered one of the great "crimes" of the Middle Ages and Dandolo and the Venetians the villains behind it). But "rehabilitating" their image is one of Madden's stated goals in this book and so, wherever the Venetians can be defended, he defends them. From how fair the transport rates they charged the Crusaders were (they were) to how strictly they followed papal prohibitions on trading strategic goods with the Muslims ( they did, it was those rascally Genoese and Pisans who didn't).
Dandolo's vision is another subject Madden has, ehm... revisionist views about (sorry). His signature on a document from 1174 is, he argues, conclusive evidence that he was not blind at that time ( since those who could not read could not legally sign a document). But another signature, from 1176, shows a significant downward curve (both signatures are reproduced in the book and the reader can compare). This fact, combined with Villlehardouin's testimony that Dandolo lost his vision after a blow to the head, leads Madden to conclude that Dandolo suffered from cortical blindness and the loss of vision was gradual. If this is an important observation, it is because even in Dandolo's time there were rumours that he had lost his sight during a mission to Constantinople in 1172, either in a brawl with locals or at the orders of the Emperor Manuel - and modern historians repeat these rumours as part of the Fourth Crusade-as a-Venetian conspiracy theory. Madden's version is rather more convincing.
If I had a complaint about this book, it would be that it ends somewhat abruptly without going over Venice's new role as a colonial empire in the 13th century. But perhaps this is a subject better covered in more depth in another book...

A quest for the elusive life of the most famous doge of Venice

Thomas Madden writes history in the style I always hope to read. For the avid reader of history, often the question arises: how did the writer know for a fact what happened then? How can he treat a certain event as a certainty? While that's true for any attempt at recreating the past, the questions become even more intriguing when the matters at hand are events that happened eight hundred years ago. In his books Mr. Madden addresses these questions at every step of the way - contemporary sources are checked against each other for veracity, later documents are placed in their context and critically analyzed, and modern historiography is put in perspective and occasionally debunked. He doesn't rush into character evaluations based solely on guesswork and modern day standards - a sin many historians are guilty of - he presents solid arguments when his opinions are going contrary to the general opinion, and admits his limits when there is simply not enough documentary information and all that's left to us is educated guesswork.
He did not disappoint in "Enrico Dandolo and the Rise of Venice". Due to the scarcity of family history documents for that time, the doge is painted rather in matter-of-fact colors, and his image only emerges with clarity during the 4th crusade, when the he was already at the nadir of his years. However, what is lost from the portrayal of Enrico Dandolo's earlier years is gained through the insights in the stories of the other members of his family, his father Vitale, and his uncle, also named Enrico. The family history is organically wrapped in a thick layer of context about Venice in the 12th century, politics in Italy and a broader overview of the universe of the Mediterranean in the era of the crusades.
And as usual, Madden's writing style is compelling in itself. I found myself consulting the notes as often as the main text. While many of the notes are mere references to the sources, a great number of them offer insights into the complex investigative process that stands behind the beautiful prose of the book.

Great Scholarship and Well Written

Like all of his work the latest offering from Madden is tangential to his work on the fourth crusade, focussing on the life of the Doge Enrico Dandolo. Based on solid scholarship this book is also enjoyable to read.
